PARK JUBILEE TO HAIL 218TH U.S. BIRTHDAYMap of Sugerhouse Park

Deseret News is a sponsor of Sugarhouse festivities. Admission will be free.

Utahans will celebrate the nation's 218th birthday Monday, July 4, with a jubilee slated for Sugarhouse Park, located at 1300 East and 2100 South.

The celebrations, sponsored by the Deseret News, KISN 97 radio and the Sugarhouse Park Authority, will include picnics, parades, music, dancing, concessions and, of course, the largest fireworks display in Salt Lake County. The display will be coordinated with music.

Admission will be free, but rides for children, ages 2 to 12, will cost $1 per ride. The rides will feature a Ferris wheel, an airplane ride, Tubs-of-Fun, Santa Fe train, and moon walk.

Some special activities will include the Utah Special Olympics-sponsored "Dunk-A-Cop" and "Ducky Derby," sponsored by the Make A Wish Foundation.

Here is a list of the events and times:
  • 10 to 11:30 a.m.. - Country Crisp presents the "Family Bike Tour." The first 500 participants receive free water bottles. Meet at Sugarhouse Park for a 10-mile guided tour, returning to the park. The tour is directed by Peter Netka at 972-5841. Children of all ages are invited. There is no charge.
  • 1 to 8 p.m. - Diet Pepsi and Red Robin present "Frisbee Golf." Meet at the northeast terrace and play for Frisbee giveaways and other prizes plus enter to win a trip for two from Morris Air.
  • 1 to 6 p.m. - Thrifty Food Stores presents "Rollerblading." Children younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Meet at the central terrace. The first 500 people will receive free visors.
  • 2 to 8 p.m. - Lipton Ice Tea presents "Basketball Shootout." Shoot free throws at the southeast terrace and enter to win a trip for two from Morris Air plus mini-basketball giveaways.
  • 1 to 9:30 p.m. - Seven local bands perform at the northwest terrace.
  • 8:45 p.m. - Skydivers will jump onto the soccer field.
  • 9:50 p.m. - Fireworks with music.
