Ghost Riders and Rest Stops Packet B

ROCK FORT STATION

Dear Students,

After leaving Wanship Station the road followed the Weber River upstream through Summit County to Rock Fort, a tiny farming community now covered by Rockport Lake. Old foundations and sidewalks can be seen when the lake is at a low level. When the Blackhawk War threatened settlers, they built an 8 foot rock wall around the entire town. After this it became known as Rock Fort. When the Indian troubles ended, the wall was torn down and used to build houses and farm buildings. With its fort-like wall gone, the town's name was changed again to Rockport. Today all that is left is a little cemetery on a windswept ridge above the lake. You have to look close to see it for sagebrush is growing over it. Its old tombstones are near the mouth of Three Mile Canyon, which the road followed to Parley Park and Snyder's Station.
