Summary:
This lesson is part of a series of lessons for preparing students to use GPS units to map their school or safe walking routes to school. In this lesson students will observe a Lego village from multiple points of view and draw one view. Students will then use the famous places portion of Terra Server. com to look at the Statue of Liberty, the Pentagon and other famous places. This will help them better understand satellite images that they will be working with.

Web Sites

  • Terra Server
    Get a satellite photo of a specific address or even a specific building such as the Statue of Liberty or The Pentagon.

Intended Learning Outcomes:
Science -

    #1 Observe simple objects, patterns, and events and report their observations.
      #2 Maintain an open and questioning mind toward new ideas and alternative points of view.

      Instructional Procedures:

      1. Create a small, uncomplicated Lego diarama.
      2. Ask the students to sketch the village.
      3. Compare the different sketches.
      4. Discuss: Why are the sketches different?
      5. Have kids move their seats and sketch the village again from a different point of view.
      6. Compare and discuss sketches again.
      7. Discuss vocabulary such as bird's eye view, point of view and aerial.
      8. Using the computer lab or an LCD projector, show the students Terra Server.
      9. Go to famous places and show them the Statue of Liberty. On Terra Server the statue is shown from a bird's eye view.
      10. Let them explore famous locations.
      11. Show them how to type in their own address to find their own place. Read aloud the book Liberty.
