Summary

Fluency is developed as students read, reread and memorize poems. Students will present poems to the class.


Materials

Poetry books that can be read and shared by students.


Background for Teachers

Determine requirements that students will need to meet. (e.g. How often will you meet? How long will the poems be?)


Student Prior Knowledge

Students need to have extensive listening and reading experience with a variety of poetry and songs.


Instructional Procedures

  1. Teacher prepares and presents a poem or song modeling expectations for students.
  2. Students read poetry in small groups and each individual chooses a poem or song to present to the class.
  3. Each student memorizes a song or a poem.
  4. Each student will take his / her turn sitting the "presenter's" chair in front of a half circle of students and present their poem or song.


Extensions

This activity could be extended to presentations for a parent day at school.

You may choose to create a use a rubric to assess student presentation.
