PARENTAL CONSENT IS REQUIRED BEFORE TEACHING THIS LESSON!

Growing up in the 1990's can be a challenging. Making healthy and safe choices is critical to personal safety and well-being. This lesson implements decision making, role play and other activities to teach HIV/AIDS prevention.

Health Education I (7-8)Standard 1
Students will demonstrate the ability to use knowledge, skills, and strategies related to mental and emotional health to enhance self-concept and relationships with others.

Materials:

  • Behavior Index Cards
  • Role Play situations
  • Extra 3/5 cards
  • Paper

Intended Learning Outcomes:
Identify the modes of transmitting HIV. Role play various relationship situations.

Instructional Procedures:
Post red, yellow and green construction paper on the board.

RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT:
Give each student an index card with a specific behavior, such as, holding hands, kissing, vaginal sex, oral sex, unprotected sex, sharing IV drug works or needles, hugging, sitting on a toilet seat, etc. The students will place each of their cards next to the stop light colors. The RED behaviors are those in which a person could contract HIV. The GREEN behaviors are those that are safe, a person could not contract HIV. The YELLOW are behaviors that could pose a risk under certain conditions.

DISCUSS:
Red Light, Green Light Discuss the body fluids that transmit the HIV virus. **Abstinence or the proper use of a condom are two ways to prevent the transmission of HIV.

ROLE PLAY:
Review the Refusal Skills.

In small groups, the students will write role play situations using the Refusal Skills. Ask for volunteers to act out their role play situations.

JOURNAL:
Students will reflect on the lesson and write about a person they have seen on TV or personally know who has not used the Refusal Skills or made a wise, healthy decision. Describe the consequences the person was faced with.

Assessment Plan:
Students will be evaluated on participating in the activities.
