Materials

Instructional Procedures

  1. Pass out the New Words quiz and have students take it. Talk about new words that come into existence and old words that we don't use anymore.
  2. Pass out the Homophone quiz and have students work in pairs to provide a definition for each word. If they know the definition, they don't need to look it up. Review some of the words to be sure they understand.

Assessment Plan

Included with the Homophone document is a quiz on the words that the students have just looked up as well as a bell quiz. (The answer to the bell quiz is that if you remove the first letter of each word, you have a homophone.) There is also a homophone riddle. Have students work in pairs or small groups to see who can get all the answers first.
