This lesson plan is intended for third graders. They will learn about prefixes and suffixes. Since third graders already know how to read and write, learning this concept may benefit them because they will learn more words for their vocabulary.

Materials

Attachments

  • kidspiration_Pict.pdf
The Kidspiration chart will help the students to have a visual of what prefixes and suffixes are. This chart should be use to give the students a better understanding of the concept. This chart should be shown to the whole class after the topic has been introduced and before the teacher reads the books and the children play the games.
  • PreSuffix_repro.pdf
The students can play this game in groups of three or four.

Websites

  • First School Years
In this website, the instructor will find many worksheets and games that students can do as part of the lesson plan.
  • Zoodles
This website has a variety of games suitable for third grade students.

To teach prefixes and suffixes, the instructor will use books, the kidspiration chart, flash cards, a jeopardy game created by the teacher using power point and games from the Internet to use as a class in a computer lab. Here is a list of the books that are recommended for this lesson:

Background for Teachers

Attachments

The teacher should have a good understanding of how words are formed when attaching prefixes or suffixes. Another important aspect for teachers to know is what the prefixes and suffixes mean. For example, bi- means two, pre- means before, etc.

Student Prior Knowledge

It is preferable but not necessary for students to be familiar with some examples of prefixes and suffixes. That way they will relate the lesson to their previous knowledge.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The intended learning outcomes is for students to learn what prefixes and suffixes are and how they are used. The meaning of the prefixes and suffixes will help the students to increase their vocabulary and figure out what words mean just by looking at the prefixes and suffixes.

Instructional Procedures

1.The teacher should introduce the lesson by asking the students if they know what prefixes and suffixes are.
2. After hearing ideas form children, the teacher should then explain what prefixes and suffixes are and provide examples of some using the kidspiration PDF to the whole class using a projector.
3.The next day, the teacher should review her lesson of prefixes and suffixes by reading one of the books, mentioned in the lesson plan, to the whole class.
4. After the lesson has been reviewed, the teacher will make groups of three to five students to play games, use the flashcards and do worksheets about prefixes and suffixes.
5. After the children are done with the activities, the teacher will create three large groups to play the jeopardy game.
6. On the third day of teaching the subject, the teacher will ask the children to write a story about one of their life experiences using words that either have prefixes and/ or suffixes. This will be an individual task therefore the teacher can make sure all of the students learned the subject well.

The teachers can assess the learning of their students by using number five and six. Number five will help to assess the class as a whole and number six will help the teacher asses each student individually.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Since there are many activities included in the lesson, students with different needs will have the opportunity to be challenge at the level they are in.

Assessment Plan

The assignment that will be used in this lesson to assess the work of students individually would be to have them write and essay about a personal experience using at least ten prefixes or suffixes correctly. The essay should be handwritten, two pages and double spaced.
