10 class periods that run 45 minutes each.

Summary:
Students will be creating a variety of poetry as well as analyzing poetry. They will work with Language standards and take a performance assessment at the end of the unit.

Main Curriculum Tie:
English Language Arts Grade 8 Reading: Literature Standard 4
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.

Career Connections:

  • Writer, journalism, interviewing clerk, data keyer/composing, child care, librarian, teacher, beautician

Materials:
It would be very helpful to have access to a computer lab or an LCD projector. Students can complete most of the assignments without them, but students do need computer time to fulfill the standards.

Background For Teachers:
Teachers should have a basic knowledge of 8th grade grammar skills and how to teach modeling in the classroom. Students that are unfamiliar with publishing their work should be taught thoroughly how to accomplish this real world application.

Student Prior Knowledge:
Students should have a basic knowledge of poetry, analyzing texts with support, and grammar skills. They should know how to publish or be taught during this lesson.

Intended Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to create and analyze various types of poetry. They will be able to share their works as well as critique others. They will also be completing an assessment at the end of the unit based on poetry and performance tasks.

Strategies For Diverse Learners:
Grouping is always critical. Make sure that when students are diverse and have special needs diversify the group. Place some of the gifted students with those that are in need of assistance. Always make sure to follow IEP procedures if there are any writing or reading accommodations. Modeling is essential for a lot of these lessons. Write some of the poems yourself with the students to ensure understanding.

Extensions:
Students are always welcome to create another poem or a different type of poem. They could also look into more publishing opportunities. It would be fun for a student to find a published poet and bring them into the classroom to speak.
