Summary

Students will learn spelling words that contain short a vowel sounds. Students will get the chance to practice playing with the at and an word families. Students will be able to write, read, sort and match words in the at and an word families.


Materials

Students will need:

  • white board
  • white board marker
  • eraser
  • magnetic letters
  • spelling card (list of weeks spelling words)
  • own copy of poem or story
  • look, cover, say
Teacher will need:
  • SmartBoard
  • document reader or Elmo
  • story and/or poems including at and an words
  • at and an word family smart notebook document (link below)


Student Prior Knowledge

Students need to have an understanding of letter names and sounds and be able to blend three letters together.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to read, write, sort, and spell words in the at and an word family.


Instructional Procedures

Spelling words: am, at, cat, can, ran, man, a, the

  • Monday: Teach students half of the spelling words however you normally teach new words.
  • Tuesday: Finish teaching students the rest of the spelling words.
  • Wednesday: Play spelling detective with a poem or a story that has many at and an words for the students to find.
  • Thursday: Sort spelling words
  • Friday: Play look, cover, and say.

Gifted Students

  • If I can spell
  • Create sentences including spelling words
  • Act out spelling words
  • Draw a picture for each word
  • Create a list with as many at and/or an words
Struggling or special needs Students
  • Show pictures with each spelling word
  • Have students act out spelling words
  • Meet in small group to continue practicing words

Assessment Plan

Observe students during class time to see if they are understanding how to make each spelling word. Observe during writing and reading to see if they can spell spelling words and word families correctly. You can do a spelling test at the end of the week if you choose.
