Summary

During a math center, students will find numbers up to 100 using (one more) addition, (one less) subtraction, and decade addition/subtraction.

Materials

Websites

  1. Computer
  2. Internet Access
  3. Math Playground Program
  4. SMART Notebook

Background for Teachers

  1. Have knowledge of the Math Playground program.
  2. Have knowledge of how a vortex on SMART Notebook works.

Student Prior Knowledge

  1. Understand how to navigate the Math Playground program.
  2. Understand how a vortex on SMART Notebook works.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to find sums and differences of numbers 1-100 using (one more) addition, (one less) subtraction, and decade addition/subtraction.

Instructional Procedures

MATH PLAYGROUND (15 minutes) WHOLE CLASS SITE NAVIGATION BEFORE MATH CENTER

  1. Teacher will model how to navigate through the Math Playground website. A. http://www.mathplayground.com/ B. Select First Grade C. Select First Grade Mathematics D. Select Numbers Up To 100
TEACHER MODEL
  1. Teacher will model one or two of the given equations.
  2. (An award will pop up) Teacher will explain the rewards system. These rewards provide immediate, positive feedback.
  3. Teacher will purposely answer incorrectly. A screen will pop up and ask if you would like to watch a video on how to solve correctly. Watch the informative video. This will provide an audio and visual representation of the equation.
GUIDED PRACTICE
  1. Teacher and class will practice a couple more examples.
INDEPENDENT WORK
  1. Students will continue to answer the given equations independently.
  2. Students are able to monitor their own work by seeing how many correct and incorrect answers they have completed. Students are also able to look at how many badges they have earned.
10 MORE/LESS or 1 MORE/LESS VORTEX (15 minutes) WHOLE CLASS INSTRUCTION
  1. Teacher will model how to use the More/Less vortex in SMART Notebook. Try doing a correct and incorrect answer to show students what each will look like.
GUIDED PRACTICE
  1. Students and teacher will try one or two more examples.
INDEPENDENT WORK
  1. Students will complete the vortex game independently.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Math Playground provides audio, visual, and text options for every question given. This way students are able to solve equations using their preferred style of learning. More/Less Vortex has both audio and visual effects. Students will be able to both hear and see if the answer is correct or incorrect.

Extensions

Students will take one of the more/less equations from either Math Playground or the SMART Notebook program and create a story problem. Have students write the problem and draw a picture representation. Students may also practice numbers 1-120 with the given 120 grid chart.

Assessment Plan

Math Playground will give an immediate correct/incorrect score. Teacher will either have students print their scores or observe student work. The SMART Notebook Vortex game will only be completed once all answers are correct. Therefore, once the game is complete, the teacher will know all answers were correct.
