Background for Teachers

The teacher must know how to use the the computer to access websites.

Student Prior Knowledge

The students must be able to count to 50. Students must also be able to count on from a given number using both counters and a number line.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to add single digit numbers. Students will use various methods to find the total, such as counters, number line, or counting on.

Instructional Procedures

  • Teacher will introduce addition by using a real world problem. Ex: We have 3 girls and 5 boys in our class. How many student in all do we have in class?
  • Teacher then will solve the problem by counting all students, counting on from one group, and by using a number line. Go to ixl.com and show students how to use a number line if they are unfamiliar with using one.
  • Teacher will then show a video from Khan Academy on how to add one digit numbers.
  • Class will then play a math game on Math Playround.
  • Class will use Whiteboards to work simple problems.
  • Class will then pair up and make up problems for each other to solve using the method that works best for them.
  • Students will come to the board and talk the other students through a problem using their favorite strategy.

    Assessment Plan

Teacher will assess student knowledge by watching each student at the board explaining and working the problem for the class.
