Summary

Students will learn the steps in solving story problems and be able to follow those steps to solve story problems.


Materials

  • Graphic Organizers from Lucid Press
  • Plastic sheet covers
  • Whiteboard erasers
  • Expo pens for each student
  • Smartboard


Student Prior Knowledge

Students need to know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers.


Intended Learning Outcomes

After this lesson all students should be able to read a story problem, determine what the problem is asking, then draw a picture, write an equation, and solve.


Instructional Procedures

  • Teacher will put the steps for solving a story problem on the Smartboard and discuss with students.
  • Teacher will then model solving a story problem using the graphic organizer.
  • The class will solve several story problems together until all students have had an opportunity to participate and understand the process.
  • Students will work in pairs to solve a story problem using the graphic organizer.
  • Students will work independently to solve story problems.
