Summary

Students will add and subtract two-digit numbers, and explain their thinking as they determine how many school days until Winter Break.

  • Students need to be proficient with single digit addition and subtraction using multiple strategies
  • Teachers need to be familiar with asking guided questions

  • Students need to have mastered single digit addition and subtraction using a variety of strategies
  • Students should have mastered NBT standard 2, counting within 1000
  • Students need to be familiar with explaining their thinking
  • Students need to be comfortable with working collaboratively

  • Students will be able to explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.

Differentiation

  • Teachers will need to be sensitive to those students who celebrate a holiday during Winter Break
  • Possible interventions include having students determine how many days to Fall Break or Thanksgiving Break
  • Can include or exclude weekends


Extensions

Extensions:

  • Students can determine how many full seven-day weeks and remaining days left until a break
  • Extend to a later vacation time
  • Students can teach their parents how they solved the problem
