Instructional Procedures

LAUNCH: The principal needs to borrow our u-shaped table. (Or another large furniture item in the classroom).

Before we ask the janitor for help, we need to figure out if the table will fit through the classroom door. EXPLORE: Students will use objects around the room to determine if the object needed to be moved out will in fact fit through the door.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

• Reduce the choice of measuring tools.
• Assign them a group or partner early.
• Give specific measurement tools.
• Give the students a graphic organizer.
• Measure the door together and then let them work on the table.

• Have students use a different measuring tool.
• Measure various items to find things that would fit easily through the door.
• Measure various items to find things that would be too large to fit through the door.

Extensions

• Find things that will fit on a bulletin board, on a bookshelf, on their desk, etc. WITHOUT picking the item up and moving it.
• Show them the size of the door to the principal's office and discuss/explore if the table will fit. You can use masking tape or adding machine tape to represent the size or cut out a butcher paper model.
