Intended Learning Outcomes

Mathematical Practices 1, 2, and 5 are likely to be used in this task.

Instructional Procedures

LAUNCH: Bailey has a bag of 99 cookies. (or any other number to meet student needs.) But she wants more! Roll the dice. Add that number of cookies to Bailey's bag. How many does she have now? Write the numbers as you count.

EXPLORE: Students begin working with the number of cookies in the bag and adding to them. Next they will work with a partner to share the way they found how many cookies are in their bag after adding more cookies to it. These students will see how each strategy is similar or different.

DISCUSS: Start with Picture representation then move to number recognition. Look for patterns.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Make sure they have an extended 100's chart going to 120. Make sure they have an extended number line. Give them counters. Assign them a partner. Give them another starting point and do it again. Give the student a random number less than 120. Have them write the next 5 numbers. Have them write their own story.

Extensions

You can provide different dice with different numbers based on the students needs. Multiple dice could also be used as needed. This would provide 3 addends for students.
