Intended Learning Outcomes

Mathematical Practices 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are likely to be used in this task.

Instructional Procedures

LAUNCH: We are working at a gumball factory. The machine broke down. We need to help package the gumballs. The gumballs come in packages of ten. (Show a picture example or purchase a tube of gumballs to show the students.) Your job is to find out how many packages you can make out of your baggie.

EXPLORE: Students take back baggies of gumballs (11-19 gumballs in each bag). The students will start to package gum balls and begin to see the teen numbers are composed of 1 ten and more ones. Next have the students get with a partner and share how their baggies were packaged and how many ended up being in their baggie.

DISCUSS: As you begin your discussion follow the progression of Using linking cubes, picture representations, then writing the numbers.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Reduce the number of gumballs. Assign a specific partner.

Extensions

Have them do as many bags as they have time for. (All groups will not do the same number of bags.) Connect to Base Ten Blocks Connect to expanded form of teen numbers (10+3=13)
