Instructional Procedures

LAUNCH: I have made some collections. Each bag has a different collection. Will you help me by counting my collection? Choose a bag to count, how many items are in the bag? Write the number on your white board.

EXPLORE: Students return to their desks, empty the collection bag and start counting to find out how many.

After the students have found out how many are in their collection, they find a partner and discuss the ways they counted their collections.

DISCUSS: As you begin your discussion start with counting patterns/ grouping. Then progress to those who used hundreds boards and number lines.

  • Increase the number in the bag
