LAUNCH: There is a giant cookie factory where all cookies are sorted by their attributes and sold in boxes. One day, the sorting machine breaks and it is your job to help the factory sort the cookies into their boxes to be sent to the store.
You will be working with a partner. When you have sorted all the cookies, draw a picture of the cookies in their boxes and write a sentence that describes why those cookies belong in the same box. (The sentences may be closed if needed.)
EXPLORE: Students work with a partner to determine how to sort the cookies. Once they determine the attributes to sort by they will then record their sort on a paper. After a group has finished their cookie sort they should find another group to discuss the ways they each sorted their cookies.
DISCUSS: After all the cookies have been sorted, have all students walk around the class to see the mats. Have selected students share their solutions.
