Summary

Students will be able to follow directions for a map and identify angles created for the path they take.


Materials

Traveling with Angles worksheet, Math journal, pencil, map with compass rose, task sheet, colored pencils, protractor, and a variety of manipulatives for student choices, etc.


Background for Teachers

This is an introductory lesson to the following: points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines.


Student Prior Knowledge

In third grade students identified quadrilaterals by their attributes which was limited to four sides, four angles, and four corners.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Math Practices 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,and 6 will likely be used.

Extensions

  • Draw and label where the following locations are on your map below: Library, Park, Grocery Store, and School.
  • Create your own story of Jon and Cora's day. They must go to at least two of the locations you added on your map. Use a marker to draw and label each of their paths to meet at those locations. Use a different colored marker for the different paths they take.
  • Choose some of the angles you used today and measure them with a protractor.
