Summary

Students will play 20 questions using the periodic table & a list of common molecules.


Materials


Background for Teachers

Though they will be using the periodic table, all they need to know about it is that it lists all the kinds of atoms we know about.


Instructional Procedures

  1. Hook activity: Pick a substance and play 20 questions with the class trying to stump them.
  2. Record the number of questions the students asked trying to figure out what you picked.
  3. Have students partner up & take turns picking and asking questions.
  4. When finished follow up with these discussion questions as a class or have them answer it on the back of the student sheet.
    • What is one of the first questions that is asked?
    • Why is it important to know whether it is an atom or molecule if you want to get it correct in 20 questions?
    • Describe some of the things that made it tricky to get the right answer.
