Correct articulation of the /r/ sound

Summary

This lesson will cover the basics of how to correctly articulate the /r/ sound. It will teach students the anatomy of the /r/ and the correct placement. It will teach students /r/ in the initial, medial and final positions of the word.


Materials

  1. Articulation Materials: Mouth puppet, /r/ prompt visuals, /r/ infographic
  2. White board/markers
  3. Computer


Background for Teachers

Teacher must have a background in Speech language therapy. They must have a knowledge in sound development and correct placement for the /r/ sound.


Student Prior Knowledge

Student must be the developmental appropriate age to begin targeting the /r/ sound. Student must be qualified for speech language services.


Intended Learning Outcomes

After this lesson the student should understand correct articulation of the /r/ sound. They will know correct placement and the anatomy involved in correctly articulating the /r/ sound.


Instructional Procedures

  1. Teacher will begin by teaching the student the anatomy involved in sound production.
  2. Next the teacher will educate the student on the shape and correct placement of the anatomy involved.
  3. The teacher will then prompt and help the student achieve correct placement and production.
  4. They will then begin targeting the sound in the initial, medial and final positions of words.


Strategies for Diverse Learners

Students will be divided into groups based on the different levels they are at. Teacher will work in small groups which will allow for pacing based on the groups level. Small groups will also allow for more individualized instruction.

Assessment Plan

Teacher will take data during sessions. Data will be calculated to determine percentage correct. Daily speech data will help monitor progress and achievement of speech goals.
