Attachments

  • student worksheet attached
  • Nature video that shows a variety of living things in one or more different habitats
  • VCR or DVD player and video projector or TV

Background for Teachers

This is an alternative assessment for characteristics of living and nonliving things and the kingdoms of life.

Student Prior Knowledge

Students should have already completed activities using characteristics of life and the five kingdoms of life.

Instructional Procedures

  1. Many National Geographic or Nature videos would be suitable for this activity. It is very open-ended so the teacher must watch the video before the activity to make sure it has at least one example for each category on the worksheet.
  2. The teacher might show the movie for about 2 minutes and model how information from that section might be put into the chart. This will help people who are unfamiliar with open-ended observation and note-taking.

Assessment Plan

Scoring guide:
Students should have at least one reasonable example for each cell in the table. The teacher can decide whether to offer extra credit for additional examples.
