Background for Teachers
Finding a text that contains all the information you need to teach the 8th grade core can be challenging. A group of teachers in Jordan School District developed this reading selection to contain all the information students are expected to know for Standard 1. The activity contains a list of suggestions on how to use the reading materials.
Instructional Procedures
Use the reading document attached for these various activities.
- Give each student a copy of one objective and ask them to illustrate it with three drawings. Provide colored pencils, markers or crayons. Allow them to look in a textbook only after they have created their own pictures. See if anyone made a picture exactly like the text.
- Provide each student with a copy of the text and ask them to underline any word they do not understand, including the non-science words. Read the selection out loud with them and ask them to raise their hands every time you come to one the underlined words. Stop and define the word. Describe you interpretation of the text as you go (think-aloud)
- As the students to create a graphic organizer or notes on the selection. You may need to get them started with a sample or a start on the material. If you have access to computer, the Inspiration program is fun to use for a graphic organizer.
