Summary

Students will use the Utah State Core Science Curriculum to guide them in a reading/writing activity. Students may use a variety of methods to explain a part of the core to their groups.

Instructional Procedures

  1. Run off copies of the Utah State Core Curriculum but remove examples (e.g.'s). This has been done on the student sheet attached.
  2. Explain to students that the Core is an outline of the science knowledge they are supposed to learn about in 8th grade. They will be using it as a study guide in today's activity.
  3. Go over the different options available to students to analyze their parts of the core. Each group member should only analyze one indicator (lettered sentences) in the core. They can choose from the list of questions printed below the core on their student sheets.
  4. Allow time for students to work. Have each student report on their part of the core to their group.
  5. As a large group, summarize the discussions made in the small groups

Scoring Guide:
1. Students complete worksheet with appropriate ideas………………20 pts
2. Students share ideas with others in group……………………………10 pts
