Summary

Students will compare the strength of natural (paper) vs. synthetic (plastic) sacks. They will see how scientists or engineers have applied principles of chemistry to an application encountered in daily life.


Materials

Attachments

  • paper and plastic bags(have bags of different thickness of plastic like grocery, lawn, trash) You will need 3 bags of each type per class.
  • masking tape
  • textbooks (about 60)
  • scissors
  • meter sticks
  • student sheet (attached)


Instructional Procedures

  1. Ask students which type of grocery bag their family uses or that they choose when buying groceries. Ask them to describe why they choose that bag.
  2. Read the introduction from the student sheet and show students where the materials are. Divide students into groups of 4.
  3. Allow students to test the bags.
  4. Have students write their results on the board and find the averages.
  5. Allow students to finish by answering the analysis questions.
