  • Student independent worksheet

Background for Teachers

The teacher needs to know the class' overall knowledge of phonemes and phonemic awareness.

Student Prior Knowledge

Students should be able to hear, identify, and isolate individual phonemes. Students should also have a basic knowledge of blending together individual sounds to form simple words.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to identify words that rhyme. Students will be able to isolate and identify the sound that rhymes when comparing two or more words.

Instructional Procedures

  1. Students will begin the lesson by reviewing a list of words and identifying the phonemes and sounds in each word.
  2. Students will view the infographic "What is a Rhyme?" The teacher will explain the information presented on the infographic.
  3. Students will work as a whole group to practice making rhyming words.
  4. Students will form two to three lines of "ducks" depending on group size. The teacher will say a word. The first student in line will say a rhyming word and so on down the line. Once students have a better grasp of the concept the student in front may start with any word of their choice.
  5. Students will review the infographic before moving to their desks. Once at their seats allow for independent practice time by having the students complete a simple worksheet or cut and paste worksheet that requires matching of rhyming words and pictures.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

  • Students may draw pictures of words that rhyme and share them with the class or a small group of students.
  • Students may practice writing the words that rhyme.
  • The teacher can form a small group in order to work with either struggling students or to push a group of more advanced students.
  • Students struggling with the concepts may work in pairs during independent work time.
  • Students can create their own infographic on paper by drawing two pictures of rhyming words with or without labels and connecting them with arrows and neatly coloring the pictures and the background.

Extensions

  • The teacher can reread a familiar story or poem while students identify rhyming words.

Assessment Plan

  • As an exit ticket, students will be given a small slip of paper and asked to draw a picture of a word that rhymes with "hat".
  • The slips will be collected and assessed to see whether or not students are understanding the concept of rhyming.
