Student Prior Knowledge

Understand how ecosystems work, food webs/chains, how one factor affects another.

Instructional Procedures

  1. This is an activity to help the students understand how human interaction can be a major factor in how ecosystems are developed or disrupted. Students will take the position of the other organism and write to see what life would be like from their point of view.
  2. RAFT is a literacy activity where the students are giving a Role, Audience, Format, and a Topic (RAFT) and the students pick one or a combination of those listed, (or they can make up their own with your approval). Once they choose a RAFT, they write about what life would be like through another organisms eyes or different environment.
  3. Use an overhead projector to explain the different roles, audiences, formats, and topics. If that is not available give copies to the students.
  4. Give the students 20 -30 minutes to write.
  5. Have the students share theirs in different groups. These can also be read to the class.

Additional Notes:

  1. This might be a good way to assess students at the end of the unit to see if they understand the concepts.
  2. To add to this lesson, you can model an example of what could be done. Also you can use short clips from movies such as Disney's Brother Bear, where he kills a bear, then is transformed into a bear to see what life is like as a bear. He realizes that the bear he killed had a cub.
