Summary

Students will use the factual information they have learned about minerals, rocks, and the rock cycle to create a game for their classmates to play.


Materials

  • half a poster board per group
  • colored paper (butcher, construction)
  • glue
  • colored pencils
  • markers
  • scissors


Background for Teachers

Education games are a large part of the game producing industry. Educational games come in a variety of styles and formats, for example, computer games, flashcards, board games and trivia questions. Even TV and radio shows have game shows that require participants to know factual scientific information.


Instructional Procedures

  1. Have groups of 3 students brainstorm on ideas for a game using information on minerals, rocks, and the rock cycle.
  2. Provide each group with a poster board to use
  3. Provide each group with colored paper,
  4. Allow time (two days or more depending on the requirements) for idea making and creation of the game.
  5. Have students trade games and play each others games.


Assessment Plan

Scoring Guide: (25 point project)
Students participate in brainstorming session………………5 points
Students participate in game making………………. 10 points
Students participate in daily clean-up…………..……5 points
Students participate in group presentation of their game………… 10 points
