2 class periods of 60 minutes each
Summary
Students will make a poster showing different types of rocks found in National or State parks and write brief descriptions of how the rocks formed. Students will diagram the rock cycle.
Materials
- poster board
- glue
- rulers
- colored pencils, markers, crayons
- computers with internet access
- printer
- brochures from national and state parks (optional, can be obtained by visiting or calling)
- student sheet (attached)
Background for Teachers
This can be used as an assessment after teaching the rock cycle or a unit project. Students will need to see an example and may need guidance for completing the project.
Instructional Procedures
- Describe the requirements for the poster.
- Show students at least one example poster and talk about how it met requirements and/or could better meet requirements.
- Assign students to bring poster board the next day.
- Give students time to complete research and a rough draft on regular paper. You may provide students with a list of possible sources.
- Give students time to complete their posters.
- Use the rubric included on the student page to grade the posters, you may grade them yourself, have students grade themselves, or have students grade each other.
