Organisms and Energy

Summary

Students will compile information on how organisms sense energy and respond to energy. They will create a PowerPoint, booklet or poster to share their findings.

Materials

• computer lab or poster or drawing paper
• student sheet (attached)

Student Prior Knowledge

Students should understand that motion, light, heat and sound are forms of energy and that most organisms sense and respond to them.

Instructional Procedures

1. Students should pick an organism from the list below. If they are interested in an organism not on the list, you may allow them to investigate it with a warning that rare or exotic creatures may be more difficult to find information on. The purpose for the list is to ensure that students do not all do the same organisms.
   
2. Determine whether you have the computer capacity for students to work individually or in groups of a certain size. If students are not working on the Internet, determine where they will find research materials. You may wish to have appropriate materials pulled from the library shelves and collected for student use.
3. Review the rubric with students before beginning. They should make 5 slides or pictures with specified information on them. Emphasize that they do not need to find information on all four of the energy types, only three.
4. Allow students an opportunity to present their power points to the class or to pass booklets or posters during a sharing time.
