Inquiry Cube

Summary:
Students will “solve” an inquiry cube (5 clues on the cubes’ sides and a missing piece that the students figure out) Students will then make their own cube.

Standard 2 Objective 3

Investigate the structure and function of cells and cell parts.

Materials:

  • Inquiry Cube template (attached) per group
  • materials for students to make their own (a computer and printer or the template provided below and colored pencils)

Instructional Procedures:

  1. Place the inquiry cube with the “good answer” side down. Tell students they may not lift them up and look until the activity is over.
  2. Tell students to look at the sides of the cube and decide what is on the bottom. Have each group report to the class their answer and their reasoning.
  3. Explain to students that they will be making an inquiry cube related to energy in ecosystems. It could have to do with cell parts, functions or what ever else they can think of. The inquiry cube can have pictures or words on the sides. If you have a preference which you’d rather have, tell the students.
  4. Allow time for students to work. If they are using computers, it will take a little longer and students may need help learning how to make text boxes or import pictures.
  5. As students finish, they can trade cubes and see how well others solve their cubes.
  6. Each student group should pick their favorite from the group and share it with the class.
