Background for Teachers

Teachers just need to be aware of the four different line directions: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved.

Student Prior Knowledge

Students just need to be aware of the four different line directions: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved.

Intended Learning Outcomes

This activity should help reinforce the idea of line direction and how it affects a design.

Instructional Procedures

Hand out a design to each student. There are eleven different designs in the book, so the students have a variety to choose from.

The assignment is for the students to color the picture, paying close attention to line direction and how it affects the look of the picture. Caution students that if they get too caught up in a detailed design, they might not complete the picture in the class period allotted. They need to pace themselves and make sure they get done in time. Have pictures due at the end of class.

An example picture may be helpful in order to get the students started and to make the teacher aware of how long the pictures take to color.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

For struggling students, have them simplify the picture as much as possible.

Assessment Plan

These coloring sheets should be corrected for completeness only as there is no right or wrong way to color it. Point values should be determined on an individual teacher basis depending upon what a regular class period is generally worth.
