Interior Design 1
Strand 5
1 class periods of 60 minutes each
Individual
Thinking & Reasoning
This lesson will help students to understand the concept of scale and proportion through the use of incorrect examples of each.
Refer to the attached note outline for further information concerning proportion and scale. This seems to be a topic that students struggle with so please keep explanations as short and to the point as possible.
Students should be aware that scale and proportion are principles of design.
Students should be able to identify correct scale and proportion as a result of their searching for and creating examples of INCORRECT scale and proportion in this activity.
Put the Scale & Proportion note outline transparency on the overhead projector. Have students take notes from the overhead as you discuss the different aspects of scale and proportion. Give specific examples of proportion--like all the parts of a piano need to be in proprtion to one another for it to function properly as a piano. Give a separate example of scale being in relation to everything surrounding an item...like the correct scale of a person is not (in reality) larger than an automobile. Answer any questions that arise during the discussion. Hand out an assignment sheet to each student. Go over all the directions and the grading breakdown as a class. Explain that they will be creating INCORRECT examples of scale and proportion because the vast majority of things are shown correctly. Explain that if it looks right to them and if it feels comfortable to their eyes, then the scale and proportion is most likely correct. So in order for them to show that they understand the concept, they need to create incorrect examples of each. Turn the rest of the class period over to the students to finish their assignment.
Struggling students may need to be guided more closely as they complete this task. Discuss with them specific ways they could complete the assignment successfully. Show them your example collages and go over the details that make them incorrect examples of each.
Refer to the attached assignment sheet for grading breakdown specifics.
