Instructional Procedures

Invitation to Learn
Ask the children: “How are you feeling today? Which color on the graph represents how you feel today?”

Instructional Procedures

  1. Have the children mark which color represents how they are feeling on the graph.
  2. After everyone has marked the graph, read the book My Many Colored Days.
  3. Have the children mark their selection of how they feel using the information from the book (e.g., red presents “kick my heels,” blue represents “flap my wings,” brown represents “low, down.”)

Extensions

Possible Extensions/Adaptations
Keep the second graph and on a different day do the graph again. Compare the information with the previous graph. Ask the children the following questions:

  • Are the graphs the same? Why or why not?
  • Did you choose the same color on both graphs? Why or why not?
  • Do some people feel the same today as others in the class?
  • What other information can we read from these graphs?
  • If we did another graph next week, would it look like today’s graph? Why?

Family Connections
Send home a copy of My Many Colored Days with a different child each night. Make up a similar graph for the children to do at home with their family after reading the book. Share the graphs at school.
