GIS: Crime Patterns in America

Summary

This is a package of lessons produced by a geography teacher and the technical consultant to "The District" TV show. The several lessons walk users thru doing crime analysis at US state level, regional counties level, and local street level. The exercises include crime data and step-by-step instructions (with screensots) for analyzing the data and thinking about social issues as well as geographic patterns.

    The purpose of this lesson is to acquaint students with the use of GIS and its role in law enforcement. The students will examine patterns of crimes by state, by county and at the street level. Students will examine how GIS can help analyse patterns of crime in a community. Geographic analyses like these occur every day in police departments across the nation.
