GIS: Mapping 2000 Census Response Rates

Summary

This is a lesson, document, and data package that examines the data from the US Census Bureau on response rates to the 2000 census for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. This package provides GIS data that is easily investigated with the ArcVoyager US Reference Map project.

Materials

Attachments

  • ArcVoyager (SE) or ArcView GIS (or ArcExplorer) software installed
  • Activity sheet "Mapping 2000 Census Response Rates," CENRESPN.PDF
  • Contents of the CENSUS_R\DATA directory
  • Supplemental ArcVoyager SE support materials in the CENSUS_R\VOYSTART directory

Instructional Procedures

This exercise explores the state-by-state geography of how households voluntarily responded to the 2000 and the 1990 censuses. This response rate information provides a look into public cooperation (involvement) with a national event, one undertaken by the federal government. You will be investigating basically two questions:

  • Are there geographic patterns of high and low response?
  • Has voluntary participation changed over time?
