Student Prior Knowledge

This lesson is good at the end of the semester of a video productions class. The students will need to be able to perform at a higher level. This lesson could take a few class periods. This has been designed to push the students.

Instructional Procedures

Boxes need to be placed around the area with the GPS coordinates logged and easily accessible. In the boxes you will need to put the following items. You will need one separate box of each for each group.

Preproduction Box:
1. Directions for the preproduction box.
2. Music CD
3. Brainstorming papers
4. Storyboards
5. Instructions for finding the production box

Production Box:
1. Video camera
2. Video tapes
3. Microphone
4. Headphones
5. Tripod
6. Envelope with instructions for postproductions labeled "do not open until you are finished with productions"

I suggest the second box is placed with someone and not just somewhere. By looking at the contents of the box you should understand why. The students are to find the first box. Here are the directions for it.

Preproduction:

You are to make a 30 sec music video. Your song will be

The producer will choose a Director, Storyboard Artist, Location Scout, Writer, and any other as needed. Included also in this box are storyboards, paper for brainstorming, and instruction on where to find the next box. Please do the preproduction work before continuing to the production phase. You will need to come up with the idea. This idea needs to tell a story. The video will have no less than 4 angles, 4 shot selections, 2 transitions (postproduction), a voice over (does not nee to be the entire time)(post production), 3 camera movements, and at least some natural sound.

Shot selections:

You should enter the location of the second box on the line labeled "The next box is located___." You can use GPS coordinates or a description of where you placed it. An other variable is to have them solve a math problem to come up with the coordinates. Use the decryption key below the line to encrypt the message.

Production:

The producer now needs to choose a team for the production phase of the video. He will choose a cameraman, talent, sound director and any other as needed. He has already chosen a director. The producer needs to now let the director do his job. (Yes, producer, this means you need to step back and let everybody do his or her job. You can still help but you are in charge of managing the team not in charge of directing.)

Good Lu__, brake a leg!

Postproduction:

Please go back to the room. The producer needs to choose an editor to run the computer. Under the direction of the producer and director the editor needs to edit the video. Remember the sound director in this phase as well. In the video you need to have 2 transitions, good audio levels, and some graphics. The video needs to be ready by the end of class.
