Local History with GPS

Summary

Students will explore local history using GPS technology.

Materials

Garmin or equivalent GPS Unit Local Map

Background for Teachers

Teacher shoud know how GPS function, how to add coordinates to a GPS unit and operate a GPS unit outdoors.

Student Prior Knowledge

Students should have a background in Utah History, know how to operate a computer and use Power Point.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Student Outcomes include learning to locate sites using GPS, Identify historical sites and their purpose. Compare the purpose of the site to its geography. Present their information in an oral presentation.

Instructional Procedures

1. Prior to the class load the GPS units with the coordinates of historical sites in your area. 2. Introduce the GPS to the class in the first 45 minute period. Provide Students with cameras. 3. During the second class the students follow the coordinates(with supervision if needed)and locate the sites. 4. At each site students should take a picture of the site and the geography. 5. Students should fill in the comparison table between the site, the geography and the function (i.e. Mining tram in Park City, mountainous, bringing silver ore from the mines). 6. Homework; Create Powerpoint presentation on your sites. 7. Day 3 present Powerpoint and reflection paper.

Assessment Plan

Assessment is based on Power Point presentation and written reflection . I have an oral presentation rubric on my homepage.
