Summary

Use the narrative text, "The Old Woman and Her Pig" to introduce comprehension strategies. Students will learn to make predictions and check them, along with clarifying and retelling.


Materials

  • The book, The Old Woman and Her Pig
  • Chart Paper
  • T-Chart
  • Puppet materials (teacher's choice)


Instructional Procedures

DAY 1

BEFORE:

Build Prior Knowledge of Vocabulary: stile, quench, lasso, and gnaw

  1. Write words on chart paper. Show four pictures (not in order) that depict what the words mean.
  2. Have students Pair Share to determine which picture goes with each word.
  3. Have pairs share their ideas and work towards clarifying the meanings before starting the book.
  4. Add the pictures to the chart paper.
DURING:
  1. Read the book. Make sure to stop and record predictions on a T-Chart during the story. There are strategic points throughout the text to make predictions.
  2. As the story progresses, check your predictions.
  3. Make clarifications as they come up.
  4. Note characters, setting, problems and solutions.
DAY 2

BEFORE:

  1. Review the chart
  2. Pair Share (Retell the story to your partner. Switch partners and repeat.)
DURING:
  1. Reread story and refer to chart and explicitly refer to the places that you used the strategies; predicting and clarifying.
AFTER:
  1. Make puppets and retell the story in centers.


Extensions

  1. Make predictions and check them during Buddy reading.
  2. Make a comparison chart using another story (i.e. The Great Pig Escape)
  3. Draw the events in order (Beginning, middle and end)


Assessment Plan

Teacher observation of:

  1. The retellings that are done in small groups
  2. Pair Share discussion
  3. Buddy reading activities using predicting and clarifying
