Thinking & Reasoning
This lesson is an introduction to interior design and how the elements of design are used to create beautiful and comfortrable rooms.
An overhead projector, an overhead marker, interior design magazines (i.e. Traditional Home, House Beautiful, etc.), magazines for cutting up, scissors, paper, glue, and 8 envelopes containing 10 different 1-inch squares of fabric.
LECTURE NOTES: The definition of interior design is to create a functional and beautiful living environment. Home is a place you go to be happy--to get away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. A home needs to be functional, which means that it is useful and has a purpose. For example, your kitchen is used to store food, cook, and clean up. Your home should also be beautiful--a place where you can relax, be comfortable, and feel at peace.
What makes a room beautiful? It is a matter of taste and what you like. All beautiful rooms use the elements of design as guidelines for creating the perfect room.
DEFINITIONS:
COLOR: light waves that reflect off a surface to create a specific color. For example: a rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet); white includes all color waves; black has no light waves.
TEXTURE: how an object feels or looks--its surface quality (soft, hard, scratchy, fuzzy).
SPACE: an area between lines (large or small)
LINE: 2 points that are connected; they give direction and divide space (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, wavy).
PATTERN: repetition of decorative designs (flowers, geometric shapes, plaids).
Students will memorize basic interior design terms and identify their use in rooms and with fabrics.
1. Students will memorize the definitions for each design element.
2. Students will sort fabrics. They will look at and feel each fabric square, then sort them into similar piles. They will describe each fabric using the design elements.
3. Students will cut and paste a picture of a beautiful room. They will label each art element using descriptive words. For example: This is an example of a/an ___________ line.
5. Read an article from an interior design magazine, then summarize what was learned in 2-3 paragraphs.
