Cultural Multimedia Projects

Summary

Students will research a cultural element (art, music, literature, food, clothing, religion, etc) and work as a group to create a multimedia presentation. This lesson focuses on the process of creating a multimedia presentation.

Materials

• Resource materials (encyclopedias, internet, library, etc)
• Worksheets
• mPower (if desired) or other presentation software
• Access to computer lab

In this explosive information age, students need the opportunity to evaluate information and organize it into an appropriate and useful means.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will research, create, organize, and present to the class information on a cultural aspect of a region in an effective and quality manner.

Instructional Procedures

Discuss how information is presented to us in everyday life. Which forms do we like the best? Elements will probably include fun, informative, colorful, etc. Share some examples of presentations. Tell the students that they will be learning how to create a presentation. Students need to understand that the majority of the work is in the planning and organizing, and not just in the production.

ASSESS: Identify goals and objectives (Brainstorm possible cultural elements). What do we want to learn? What are the requirements for the project? What information needs to be included? When is the project due? How will we share the information with others?

RESEARCH TOPIC: Complete a webbing chart, Project Outline, and Project Script (contact me if you want my copies of these materials - bskenesisna.com). What are the major topics? What are the inportant subtopics that should be included? What media form will you use to deliver the information? Create bibiliography and source list.

DESIGN: Complete project script and assign roles. Who is responsible for parts of the project? When do these need to be done to complete the time requirements?

DEVELOP: Use mPower, Video, Slide Shows, web pages, etc, to create and develop presentation. Students work together as a group to complete the project.

INTEGRATION: How can individual group presentations be combined to create an even more extensive presentation?

EVALUATION: Are our delivery methods successful? Is the instruction effective? Were the learning objectives met? Is student performance as expected?

REVISION: Do my instructional approaches and materials need updating?

Extensions

Students share presentations with other students in other classes via the internet or invitation. Students could take presentations to elementary schools.

Assessment Plan

Students critique themselves and others using the criteria set up in the beginning. Rank each element from 1-10. Give each other feedback on strengths and revision suggestions.
