Summary

Students will learn the basic equipment used in a clothing construction laboratory.


Materials

  • Worksheets for students
  • serger
  • sewing machine
  • rotary cutter
  • mat
  • 5 small sticky notes per student


Student Prior Knowledge

Basic sewing terminology.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will understand the Background information on sewing machines and how they work. Students will understand assembly line production Students will be introduced to the serger and the rotary cutter and mat. Students will recognize differences between the serger and sewing machine.


Instructional Procedures

Day 1
Give each student 5 sticky notes. At the top of the 1st sticky note have them write: "Who"

2nd sticky note: "How"

3rd sticky note: "What"

4th sticky note: "Advantages" "Disadvantages"

5th sticky note: "Differences"

Have them place the 1st sticky note on the first paragraph of the "Sewing machine history doc."

Have them place the 2nd sticky note on the 2nd paragraph of the "Sewing machine history doc."

Have them place the 3rd sticky note on the 3rd paragraph of the "Sewing machine history doc."

Have them place the 4th sticky note on the 2nd paragraph of the "rotary cutter-mat.doc."

Have them place the 5th sticky note on the 1st and 2nd paragraphs on the "Serger.doc"

5 Questionsppt. Students read the 3 papers and write the answers to the questions on their sticky notes.

Fill in worksheet with sticky notes in appropriate places.

Day 2
The student will understand the imporatance of a seam ripper, marking pen, shears, seam guage and pins in sewing. The serger will be introduced to the students. Students will understand how a sewing machine works and also the background of where a sewing machine came from. Students will learn how a bobbin and bobbin case work in the sewing machine. Students will understand how a foot pedal makes the machine go. Students will understand the basics of sewing techniques and procedures by completing the assignments below and discussing the power point.
