Summary

Students will understand the human reproductive process, infertility, pregnancy, and steps that lead to a healthy lifestyle.

Instructional Procedures

Vocabulary
Use the following worksheets to introduce and reinforce vocabulary for related to lesson.

Introduction/Pre-Assessment
Have the students draw the female and male reproductive organs, and see if they can label each part correctly. This will help them see that although they may know some information, there is still much they can learn.

Content Outline, Activities and Teaching Strategies
(All options do not necessarily need to be taught. Select ones to cover standards and objectives and according to your district policies.)

Option 1: Female Reproductive System
Present the lecture. Use the Human Reproduction PowerPoint to lecture to students while student complete the Female Lecture Guide (pdf).

Option 2: Male Reproductive System
Present the lecture. Use the Human Reproduction PowerPoint to lecture to students while student complete the Male Lecture Guide (pdf).

Option 3: Bingo
Using the Bingo Cards (pdf) and the Bingo Teacher Information (pdf) and Vocabulary List (pdf), have student fill out the cards with the vocabulary words. Read a definition and see if they can guess the term and cross it off their bingo card accordingly.

Option 4: Changes in the Mother
Using the Prenatal Mother Teacher Information (pdf) lecture on the changes that occur to the mother during the three trimesters of pregnancy, using the Prenatal Mother Changes PowerPoint and One Month at a Time Worksheet (pdf) and One Month Key (pdf).

Option 5: Development of the Baby
Lecture on the development of the fetus using the Fetal Development PowerPoint and Fetal Development Teacher Information (pdf), One Month at a Time Worksheet (pdf) and One Month at a Time KEY (pdf).

Option 6: Infertility, Problem Pregnancies, Birth Defects
Using the Problem Pregnancies Teacher Information (pdf) deliver the lecture/discussion. Discuss the Conception Calendar (pdf) and have students fill out the Conception Worksheet (pdf).

Option 7: Empathy Belly
The Empathy Belly may be purchased for use with this unit. This is a device that simulates the physical changes that occur in a mother's body during pregnancy.

Summary/Evaluation
The human reproductive system is a complex, wonderful thing. There are many things one can do to prepare and have a safe and enjoyable pregnancy. Once the baby is born bonding is a vital process to help in the development of normal, well-adjusted children.
