Summary:
Students will use a “knowledge check” table to analyze their background knowledge about atoms.

Strand 6.2: Energy Affects Matter 6.2.1

Develop models to show that molecules are made of different kinds, proportions and quantities of atoms. Emphasize understanding that there are differences between atoms and molecules, and that certain combinations of atoms form specific molecules. Examples of simple molecules could include water (H2O), atmospheric oxygen (O2), and carbon dioxide (CO2).

  1. This checklist can be used at the beginning of a unit on atoms as a pre-assessment or frontloading activity.
  2. Read the directions with students and allow them to fill out the chart.
  3. If students find they cannot define the words they thought they knew, have them change their checked answers.
  4. Use the sheet as the unit progresses for students to update their progress.
  5. A vocabulary quiz at the end of the unit should show student progress on their understanding of these words.
