Summary

Students will research an historic natural disaster. Research will include information on the disasters' impacts to weather, climate, waterways and surrounding ecosystems. The research will be compiled into a concise essay.


Materials


Background for Teachers

Objective: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of how an alteration to one of the earth's spheres influences the surrounding geosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere.

Time Needed: 120 minutes in class, 1-2 weeks outside of class.

Safety/Security Issues: Be sure students treat computers with respect and sign out any computers that are being used. At the end of the class period be sure all computers are accounted for.


Instructional Procedures

  1. Make copies of the student sheet and overheads.
  2. Reserve 2 days of computer lab time or laptop checkout.
  3. Distribute and review student sheet with students.
  4. Display list of topic ideas with students.
  5. Allow research time. Be sure to monitor student progress and use of class time. You should also be aware of each students topic to make sure it is appropriate for the age level.
