Select books about animals in your environment. These books should include information about animal growth. The students should also have knowledge of how to use nonstandard measurement tools.

Invitation to Learn
Ask the students to recall information about different animals that they have
seen. Share information about the growth of animals. Read and discuss your favorite
books on how animals grow.
Instructional Procedures
Family Connections
Each child should go home and invite their family to help them look around their
neighborhood for animals in various stages of development in their environment.
Bring your written descriptions back to class and discuss what was learned.
Give each child a copy of the animal growth assessment page. Each child may choose an animal of their choice and draw the changes that happen during the life cycle of the animal. Each child may share their findings with other members of the class.
