    Intended Learning Outcomes

  • The student will be able to recall and relate information relative to pre-Reconstruction America.
  • The student will show who were the most important contributors in early American history.
  • The students will explain what contributions were made during this time period.
  • The students will relate how early American history has affected present day America.


    Instructional Procedures

    Students should be given the grading criteria ahead of time.(See Assessment)

  • Teacher will give a brief review of pre-Reconstruction history.
  • Students will be put into groups of 2-5.
  • Teacher will demonstrate how to write a newspaper article.
  • Teacher will have each group pick a time period or event from pre-Reconstruction America,
  • Students will use whatever research tools are available to search for information on the people, the events, the culture, the economy, and the government of that time period.
  • The students will work together to put together a newspaper that reflects the above aspects of that time period. They may have editorials, fashion, music, food, sports, news, biographies or any other sections they wish to show.
  • Each group will present their newspaper to the class and then each group will read the other groups papers.

  • The newspapers will then be placed around the room for all class members to read.
  • Class members will take notes on each of the papers and then turn in their notes: preparation points only.
  • Assessment will be done by rubric.
