2nd Grade - Act. 11: Character Sketch


This lesson takes a closer look at character, tapping into what a character thinks, says, feels, does, and tries, as well as his or her strengths and weaknesses. Students will use what they read to analyze the character in the story.

Instructional Procedures:
Invitation to Learn
Show the students the drawing of the Rotten, Red-Headed, Older Brother. Have you ever tried to put yourself in a book that you’ve read? What did the Rotten, Red-Headed, Older Brother think or say in the book?

Instructional Procedures

  1. Post the picture.
  2. Solicit responses to what the Rotten, Red-Headed, Older Brother thought, said, felt, tried, did, and his strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Chart student responses.

Family Connections
Read through a favorite book or fairy tale. Discuss the character using thoughts, words, feelings, things tried, things done, strengths, and weaknesses.

Assessment Plan:
Were students able to provide adequate responses for each of the areas?
