2nd Grade - Act. 22: The World Game


 

Summary:
Playing the World Game will make students more familiar with continents, oceans, countries and states.

Social Studies - 2nd Grade
Standard 3 Objective 2

Demonstrate geographic skills on a map and a globe.

  • clue card game

Earth is the name of our planet.
It’s shaped like a ball or a sphere.
It’s covered with land and water.
A globe makes this picture quite clear.
(Chorus)
Seven continents, four oceans, on our planet Earth . . .
Seven continents, four oceans, on our planet Earth!
On Earth there are seven continents.
A continent’s a large mass of land.
Four large bodies of water are oceans.
In fact, there’s more water than land!

Instructional Procedures

  1. Give students a clue directing to a particular continent, ocean, country, or state on the map.
  2. Have students guess the location by putting their finger where it might be.
  3. Give a second clue.
  4. Continue until all clues are given.
  5. Ask students to raise their hands if they figured it out on the first, second, or third clue.

Part 2

  1. Hold up the beach ball globe.
  2. Arrange students in a circle.
  3. Throw the ball to a student and have them catch it.
  4. Ask the student, “Where is your thumb?” Repeat the activity keeping track with tally marks on the board of how many times it is on land, and how many times it is on water. Students will realize that the earth is made up of more water than land.

Extensions:
Possible Extensions/Adaptations
The clue game could be played in centers. One student could give clues, while one or more students guess.

Family Connections
Students can ask their family where their ancestors lived. They can look at some of the countries on a map and discover together what they are like.
