Summary

This lesson provides students with an opportunity to create visual examples of each type of storage that should be found incorporated throughout the home.

Materials

  • magazines
  • white paper
  • Storage Hunt assignment sheets
  • overhead projector
  • Floor Plan Evaluation note outline transparency

Background for Teachers

Please be aware that there are two types of storage that can be used throughout the home in order to create the necessary 10-15%.

Student Prior Knowledge

Students need no prior knowledge of storage to be successful in this activity.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to visually identify the difference between built-in storage and furniture storage.

Instructional Procedures

Have students take out their notes for this unit. Put the Floor Plan Evaluation note transparency on the overhead projector. Go over all the information discussing specific examples of closed floor plans (school) and open floor plans as well as examples of each type of storage. Go over all aspects of the classroom--what is built-in storage and what is furniture-type storage.

Make sure to differentiate between furniture-type storage and furniture. For example, a chair isn't a type of storage, but bookshelves are. Hand out the Storage Hunt assignment sheet. Go over all the directions as a class, answering questions as they arise. Show example collages so that students can see further what is expected of them. Turn the rest of the class period over to the students to complete their collages.

Assessment Plan

Refer to the attached Storage Hunt assignment sheet for evaluation specifics.
